As we reach the holiday season, let us all be thankful for the blessings that we receive each day. We are so blessed to have a wonderful place to live and raise our families. In the spirit of the season, I pray that we come together as a community to solve our problems, understand our differences, and serve our students. Thanksgiving is a wonderful reminder of things that we may take for granted such as our freedoms, our opportunities, and our love of family and God. I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

I believe there is some misinformation going around about the technology we are handing out. Just wanted to clarify some frequently asked questions. The same agreement form that went home with the iPads is being used for the new devices. The parents signed the same agreement 3 years ago. The price of the OPTIONAL insurance for the devices is $50 for Microsoft Go and $15 or iPad. This covers the device for 1 year. The insurance company will send a box to the home of the family and repair or replace the device. Nicholas County Schools makes no money from the insurance. It was simply a courtesy that we set up to give the parents peace of mind if they wanted to purchase it. The students will be using the devices at school even if the parent does not sign it. It has their books and curriculum on it. They must. They just won't take them home. If a student does not purchase insurance and breaks their device, Nicholas County Schools will attempt to fix it and only charge what the price of parts are. Not the full price of the device, if it is repairable. If not repairable, then they will be charged the full amount.

Well, we are off to a great start! Mrs. Whytsell and I have been out to all schools, met many of the employees, and have spoken to several students! The reception we have received has been very inspiring and encouraging. We know that there will be bumps along the way and we will make decisions that not everyone will agree with. But that is just normal. Know this. We will continue to visit schools, meet with employees, and talk to students. We choose to do this because it matters, and these students must be (and will be) our number one priority. Thank you for your warm welcome as we work together to build better relationships and make our school system the best it can be!

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you that may not know me. I grew up on Fenwick Mountain and attended New Hope Grade School and Richwood High School. I began my teaching career at Glade Creek Elementary School in January of 1974. I then taught two years at New Hope before getting my first principal's job at Fleger Ridge at the ripe old age of 24. After one year, I became principal at New Hope and was there for nine years before going to Keslers Cross Lanes for four years. Next, I was principal at Zela for nine years and finished my career at Panther Creek after serving as principal for nine years. I retired and then took a full time PE job at Glade Creek and Beaver. The following year, I did the same job at Mt. Nebo and Mt. Lookout. In August of 2007 I was asked to be principal at Hillsboro Elementary School in Pocahontas County for a couple of weeks until a principal could be found. I ended up remaining the principal for that year and I left Pocahontas County 14 years later after serving as superintendent the past eight years. I have been asked many times this month why I chose to take on this job with all of the controversy and issues that have taken place due to the 2016 flood. It is simple....this has been my home and I want to try and help. I have friends and family all over Nicholas County so I have no bias or hidden agendas. We have many pressing needs in our schooIs and not all of them are flood-related. We have students and employees that need our attention and support. I promise to do my best and would appreciate your patience and support as we work through this process. together. Terrence Beam, Superintendent
