Graduation for Richwood High School has been moved to the Red Gym in Richwood tonight at 7:00. due to weather concerns.

I would like to make a few quick reminders about the schedule for graduation and the last day for students. Graduation for Richwood High School will be held at 7:00 on Thursday, May 23 at Dean Memorial Field (weather permitting) or the Red Gym in Richwood in case of bad weather. The graduation for Nicholas County High School will be held on Friday, May 24 at 7:00 at the Summersville Arena and Conference Center. The last day for students is Thursday, May 30. Students will be dismissed on a three hour early out schedule.

I would like to clear up any confusion about the levy results from this past Tuesday. One of the news stations is reporting that our levy failed because it did not have a 60% favorable vote. That information is incorrect. The excess levy was passed! An excess levy only has to have a simple majority vote to pass. Bonds, on the other hand, must have a 60% approval in order to pass. I hope that this clears up this issue. I have contacted the news station and asked them to correct their error. Terrence Beam, Superintendent

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens of Nicholas County for their support of our students by passing the excess school levy. This will ensure services that have been established to continue until at least 2030. This includes security at our schools with PRO officers, free meals for all of our students, free admissions to ball games for students, support for 4-H and local libraries, dental and optical services for our employees and their families, and many other things. I want to thank the committee that worked to gain support for our levy. Many people had a hand in this, but I must mention Pam Cline, Terri Rodebaugh, Susan Johnson, and John Staats or their roles in this very important and successful process. There are other community members that played vital roles as well but choose to remain anonymous. Again, thank you for the support of Nicholas County Schools.

Good afternoon, We were alerted of a situation near the Zela community that necessitated a lock down of the school. We called the principal to do such, but the students had already been loaded on buses to be taken home. The principal and the central office stayed in communication with the drivers to make sure our students got home safely. I allowed staff to leave a few minutes early from work. A large number of police officers are on the scene monitoring the situation. At no time, was the threat at the school itself and neither our students nor our staff were in harm's way. That is all of the information that I have at this time.

Teacher Appreciation Week begins May 6 and I want to take this opportunity to recognize and celebrate all teachers, but especially Nicholas County teachers. I have been blessed to be able to visit every classroom teacher this year and have found them to be dedicated to their career and committed to our students. Education is tough these days, much tougher than I had it when I was a teacher. They deal with things that I could not have imagined. The challenges that they face daily are daunting, yet they are diligent in making a difference for our students. Thank you to all of our teachers for the work that they do every single day. I appreciate you! I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting your classrooms this year and hope to do it again next year! Terrence Beam, Superintendent

Please use caution when sending personal information to anyone. To educate people for their protection you can take this email phishing quiz. Wednesday, April 24 is Administrative Professionals Day! This is a day that is used to celebrate our administrative professionals (such as secretaries and clerks) for the important work that they do for our schools every single day. Many times, they are the first people to welcome parents and students to our buildings and their presence can set the tone of the conversations that may occur. Good evening! There will be a countywide meeting for rising 10th, 11th & 12th grade students of BOTH high schools on Wednesday April 24th at 6pm at the Nicholas County High School Auditorium. Rising 10th, 11th & 12 grade students & parents are highly encouraged to attend to learn about the newly developed dual credit pathways that will put students on track to a collegiate certificate or associates degree from New River Community & Technical College. The exciting opportunity includes free tuition, saving both time and money while leading to an earlier completion of educational goals. We hope you will make plans to attend this presentation. Attention Summersville Elementary: The City of Summersville is currently making repairs to a water leak near the school. Please avoid using Oak Street as it will be closed until the estimated time of 5pm. Use Alderson Road as an alternative route. Thank you for your understanding and patience while they work to make repairs.

In preparation for the April 8 solar eclipse, solar glasses have been ordered for all Nicholas County students and teachers. We feel that this is a unique opportunity for our students to experience this rare phenomenon. Teachers are encouraged to prepare a short lesson in preparation for this event. One asks for cell phone numbers and the other mentions gift cards. They are not from us. We are trying to track down the issue and resolve. I apologize for the confusion.
